Your quest is a monumental one. I started doing what you're wanting to do in the mid-1980s. I still don't own all of Barbie's family, but the ones I don't have are pretty obscure. And you won't get much help from other collectors (books aren't much help either; most of them have only a few pages dedicated to your subject). I would say that 90 percent of the Barbie collectors out there focus only on Barbie herself, and buy only the occasional Ken or Midge or Skipper. I'm one of the few people in the world whose main focus in 25 years of collecting was on her family.
I quit buying new dolls in 1999, so I can't help you with the bazillion Kelly friends and the various fairy Barbie lines. In fact, I wish I could find a website that talks about Mermaidia and Fairytopia.
When I quit nine years ago, Barbie already had close to 400 friends and relatives. I imagine that, if you count the Kellys and fairy dolls, that the number is closer to 800 today. Good luck!
