A book that will probably help you immensely is called "Thirty Years of Mattel Dolls, 1967-1997," by J. Michael Augustyniak. It's not meant to be specifically a Barbie reference book. Rather, what it contains is information and pictures about her "acquaintances," such as celebrity and Disney dolls, the Jazzie lines which I just mentioned, and other Skipper- and Stacie-sized dolls.
It also contains information about other Mattel dolls such as its 70s TV action figures including the Kotter and Happy Days lines.
