Posted by XpatrickX on June 25, 2005, 10:56 am On summer's first day, nobody was talking about the fact that in a few days the Nazis would be in town. "I didn't know they were coming," said Frank Autry of Norton Shores, Mich., as he and his wife Betty walked down Main Street. "We would leave if we weren't going to already." On Saturday, members of the National Socialist Movement will don their Nazi uniforms and march to a field on the Yorktown Battlefield grounds for speeches by members and officers of the Ku Klux Klan espousing white separatist views. The NSM bills itself as the largest Nazi Party in the United States, and commander Jeff Schoep of Minneapolis expects at least a couple of hundred members to attend the rally. Two peaceful demonstrations are planned on the open fields, as well. The only indications earlier this week of Saturday's activities were small orange flags marking demonstration sites and crews busily mowing swaths through sun-dried battlefield grass. Rosemarie Sharadin of York County, who was at the beach with her 4-year-old grandson, said her mother-in-law is German and lived through the Nazi raids. "We're a peaceful community," she said. "I hate to have all that disruption." At the new multimillion-dollar Riverwalk development along the York River, the owner of a Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlor was untroubled by the demonstration plans. Bob D'Eramo said his business, which opened on Memorial Day weekend and is already a gathering spot for young people, would operate as normal. He didn't agree with the racist message, but he defended the Nazi group's right to rally. rest of it is here

YORKTOWN, Va. - Camera-carrying vacationers explored the 18th-century town that adjoins the Revolutionary War battle site, filed into restaurants and combed gift shops for souvenirs. With temperatures just right and humidity low, residents staked out spots on the beach down the hill.
