Thanks for your response. I'm not going to make the statement that our tournament is less/more tough than Tri-State due to some calls you feel the refs made last year, that would be completely inconsiderate to the efforts of the wrestlers. |
However I will say this. As a tournament director, father of a wrestler, fan of the sport and going into my 12th year as an official, we all know the importance of the officiating. At this level, we especially want/need the referees to be of the highest caliber to match the wrestling.
I can't speak on how other tournaments select their officials, and most of the time it is solely up to the local association's assigner to give you the man power. From day one we have been fortunate enough to ask for what we feel is the best available officials and the assignors have been more than happy to get them for us, including to borrow them from across the state and even Oregon.
Due to the incredible success of competition we have had year after year, last year I implemented an evaluation process to ensure the level of officiating. I checked with coaches, officials, the tournament committee and the assignor for their thoughts and it was a green light all the way.
We now have sheets with the officials picture and first name with specific aspects to grade them. I give them out to Head Coaches, committee members, and both Phil and myself fill them out each day. I then average all of them and give the results to each official and the Head Official makes the decision who blows the whistle and who assists through the semi's and finals. We also determine with the assignor (and have done so already for this year) who will be coming back and who may not be ready to handle this environment.
I am proud of the officiating at The Gut Check and we are doing our best to match the officiating with the wrestling. We are a FLO Tournament and with the streaming every call and match is seen by many. We get feedback on the wrestling and officiating from college coaches, out of state parents, etc.. We like the feedback so we can make these adjustments if guys like myself and Phil are too close to it or just plain busy running the tournament.
ALL feedback is needed and we appreciate it. Sorry this was so long winded but I felt the need to explain in detail the issue and solutions. I hope this helps and is more transparent. I am uploading a blank evaluation sheet for all to see. Stay healthy and see you in January!
