Use the banquet to fire up kids and parents for next year about a team goal. Make it really clear to parents. Insert fundraising and parent expectations to be a great team in here too. Down the road kids and parents will be inundated with Summer camps so you need to be out in front of everything else and give parents time to budget for the wrestling expenses often months in advance. |
Explain all the off season steps to achieve the team and individual goals. Get buy in by having some of the team leaders talk about how cool it is. Set the dates really clearly and communicate with email, social media and most importantly texts. Send hard copy mail to the wrestlers house too. Follow up frequently using those same methods. Meet fairly often with your most committed team leaders and task them with getting the others. A summer body fat testing date is a great way to draw them in and it helps to follow up with goals on achieving a personalized body fat plan/goals for each wrestler even the ones who won't win many matches for you.
The recipe for failure is parents who are not sure what is going on and have no time to budget. Kids will start to enjoy the spontaneous opportunities of Summer due to poor coach communication. In fact if you are a coach who seems to disappear for a month at a time or who only communicates with a handful you will find yourself with one of those teams that can't fill a full dual meet line up let alone a jv and c team.
