Bellingham will be lucky to have two or three placers, and none of them will go higher than 5th. If they crack the top ten they will be lucky. WF West and Blaine will be in the hunt.

Takemura
Mullett
Owings
Lott

I think all of them went two and out except Lott, who placed 4th only because two of his "wins" were by injury default.

i think the finals you guys predicted will be wrong cause you have DeLeon who can make it either at 60 or 52 since he is weighing about 65 right now and Lopez at 35 or 30 since he is weighing 40. two guys that are 3 time state placers with a bad state tourney last year. time to make it up from last year and make something of themselves this next year.Othello will be strong team wise with 6 returning state veterans and young wrestlers who have been around wrestling there whole life.

I agree with the idea of Lopez making the finals but not Deleon.He wont beat kids like Ford or Rhoads at 152.At 160 I dont see him able to keep with Coates or Harrington. These are kids that completed a full freestyle season not to mention they wrestled at the national level.Deleon is a great athelete but is losing ground not competeing at this level.

Lopez and DeLeon compete in other sports not just wrestling thats why they dont wrestle year round. It dont matter because when they wrestle eachother they are up to the same level as the guys who wrestle year round. But through all the sports they do they still practice with former State Champs like Freddie Flores, Phillip Ontiveros and runner up Rudy Ochoa. on top of that they work out with state champ Lupe Perez all summer and go to camps for multiple sports. these guys who wrestle year round should be at the top of the podioum at the tourneys. what happened to COates at district finals??

The real question is what happen at regionals? Ruben and Armando are fantastic wrestlers but I will agree wrestling has become and is becoming more of a year round sport and if you dont keep up with the rest it is very possible you may fall behind.

ya i agree with that that wrestling is starting to be a year round sport but look at how great they are as wrestlers when they are in other sports and not just one. for the ones who do it year round should be at the top at about every tourney and Lopez and DeLeon are usually on top without going year round. they can compete at big tourneys as of Lopez taking 9th at High School Nationals and runner up at state in 08 and 4th last year. DeLeon placing 5th as a freshman and 7th as a sophomore. they had bat tourney but look at how there doing with only competing really during the season than with the guys doing it year round. As of u who do it year round doesnt it suck doing it as your only sport and still losing and you would lose to DeLeon if you had to wrestle him and you know that. Not to be mean or nothing cause you and your bro are good wrestlers to but can be better since that is really your only sport and you guys do it year round

Take it from a guy who knows, losing when you wreslte year-round sucks. However, wrestling year-round puts you ahead of the kids who do it as a seasonal sport. Look at all the state champs this past season, all of them compete in offseason wrestling. It is getting tougher and tougher to place well at state if you are only wrestling 3 months out of the season. Look at DeLeon's two years so far. Fifth as a freshman, and then seventh as a sophomore (phenomenal finishes by the way, he is a great wrestler). There is a little dip in places there. He was beat by a kid in the quarters this past season that didnt even place in his weight the year before. I know that this kid wrestles year round as well. Lopez finished lower this past season as well, making it an arguable and valid point that kids who do wrestle year-round are more capable of making bigger jumps in skill and therefore have a better chance of placing high.

it is true that wrestling year round will get u better and placing higher but look how they do it year round and Lopez or DeLeon resally dont they still place just as good as they do. DeLeon is a great athlete with being varsity year round with 3 different sports and Lopez the same.Lopez wrestling with a concussion at state and dislocated shoulder does make it harder and especially at the tourney they were at. DeLeon cutting alot than thought he would and never wrestled at that weight since year before.

You might get away with that in 1A but not in 4A. Rarely do you see someone in the top 4 in 4A that does not wrestle in the spring and/or summer. The big guys (189-285) might also play football but they still wrestle off-season.

Lopez and DeLeon wrestle off season to but not alot they maybe go to 4 or 5 tourneys and thats it. they usually practice couplke hours a day maybe 3 or 4 days a week with freddie, phillip rudy and lupe. they also have other sports practices during the time they wrestle and still place jsut as good as people who do it year round

Thinking there will be no one else in the distrct that can compete with those two at that weight.For some reason cant remember his name but the kid at Sela will be tough.Hopfully he is around 160 also.Should make for some very exciting matches!

Chris Rowe is the guy from Selah and ya he is a good wrestler and will be a good guy in at 60 and or 52. he is a solid wrestler just needs to get in shape for a full match and that will make him a little bit better

Rowe will be 152/145 Noble will be tough as well 171/160 Nobel had a great season fell apart during post season under class men tend to that some times.

i can see him giving Harrington a good match but DeLeon has beaten Coates before at camp and thats cause he has not wrestled since state that year and pplus DeLeon is alot better during the season and can keep up with Coates

For WF West, returning placers are Jesse O'Camb, Andrew White, Cody McNurlin, Alex Nunez, and Ben Bellmont. They also return three more participants who all won a match at the dome.

Nick went 189 early last season and cut to 171. He was a light 189 last year but my guess is he walks around 190-195 now. If so, 171 might be too much to lose this year. If he goes 189 he will not be tested because that weight looks weak in 2A this year. King will not come close. Hunter Orgill will probably have to go 215.

I think "2A Finals" was being funny when he said they will be at these weights for sure. It looks like a pretty good guess to me. By the way, Ford does not look big. He will wrestle 52 during the season and 45 at State. I also heard Krzmarzick from Hoquiam is coming back (5th year senior).

yeah that looks very good. for state placers I want to put shaypher hendricks of blaine up there (119), ren bishop up there at 103 or 112. I think that one baker kid postlewait has a chance as well as calhoun at 130. they are both pretty tough but not state finals material at all. I say 7th or 8th. uhhhmmmmm yeah, 2A looks pretty good this year. Being a 3A guy and all that takes a lot to say =]

othello has all but one returning state vet. De leon and Lopez had bad state tournys. Those two have the potential to be in the finals along w/ jordan and reubela. Rueben Lopez was a state finalist in 2008.

Poot beat him a few times during freestyle and only lost to him once while Poot was sick. I actually love Hendricks and think he is an outstanding wrestler but I must say Poot (while healthy)had no problem beating him.

If your saying Shaypher Hendricks would beat Garret Varnell your an idiot. They did wrestle this past freestyle season in fact i was the ref. it was at the arlington tournament. Varnell is a very strong 119 pounder and will kill people at 119 not saying he is going to win it, but he will place top 5 in state! Hendricks for sure doesnt stand a chance. Varnell is bigger, stronger, and better. Good luck cant wait to prove you wrong

It is one thing to correct someone and another to come on the board as a mommy doting on your little Poot. Give it a rest and go watch Jerry Springer. For crying out loud the kid went three and out at state at 103 and then two and out the next year at 112. Do you think it will be any easier at 119 or 125? Not only are you embarrassing your little Poot with your posts, but it will be double whammy if he comes home from Tacoma with no medal this year. Use your head.

Well now we can drop it because it will be Decided on the mat. I for one hope you meet up with the wrestlers you belittle and they clean the mat with you. Both of these young men are nice young men and fantastic wrestlers. They have parents who are proud of them!! and whole communities as well to support them. that is one of the things that makes the sport of wrestling great, how we all can rally around our guys. When the match is done and someones hand is raised there is no arguments left on who was the better wrestler at that time on that mat in that match. I wish them both a great Season and look forward to if and when they meet up.

And not because I disgree but because I think you did a great job seeing you didn't just take finalist from last year and move them up a weight like we often see
and there was only a handful of these guys that wrestled freestyle last season and I think only one maybe two that went to Fargo

For many kids the trip to Fargo is meaningless and irrelevant. They spend all that time and money and go two and out--maybe three and out. Then they come back and get beat by kids who did not even wrestle freestyle. If you are not that good going to Fargo does about as much good as staying home and watching the movie Fargo.If you are already good then of course you have a chance of doing well at Fargo. But just going to Fargo is no reason to rank someone very high. Going to Fargo is overrated.

You obviously haven't been to Fargo, or if you have it wasn't as a wrestler or as someone who 'got' it. Going to Fargo is more than just wrestling in the tournaments and going two and out if that happens. You get a chance to be around the best wrestlers in our state and train with them. That can't do anything but make you better. You get a chance to witness first-hand the best wrestlers in the country, if you take the time to do so. There is so much to be learned and experienced from that trip. I have seen a number of wrestlers over the years come out the other side of July much better due to their mat time from Fargo, not just against other opponents, but against their training teammates. There are those that don't take advantage of the full experience, and it shows from their reactions in matches there and how they wrestle the following year. However, those are the exceptions.

The proof is in the pudding dude. Going to Fargo means you placed at state freestyle, which often means just show up because so few in bracket. Then your parents have the $$ to shell out. Going to Fargo might make you "better" whatever that means. But again, we see wrestlers all the time who have made the trip and then get their butts kicked in high school by kids who did not go. Going to Fargo should not be a criteria in ranking kids for high school wrestling.

But going and doing good should deffinatly count for pre season rankings when the rest of the highschool kids have done nothing right?
And you can qualify through battle ground and if you say placing top three there is easy you do not know what you are talking about

I have always thought that the more irons in the fire the better. But you have to prioritize when you have lots of kids and are not independently wealthy. If you can afford to send your son to Virginia Beach, Fargo, dual team, and camp, then it obviously can't hurt.

My experience as a dad of three sons who were state placers in high school (one 2nd as a senior, one 5th as a senior, and one 2nd as a junior and coming back as a senior this year)has been that the one who had the most extensive freestyle career placed lowest at state. (We dragged him to all the big tourneys, and 1X to Western Regionals.)One reason he did not place as high as his brothers was because he wrestled 158 as a senior and they were bigger, going 215. The other part was that freestyle helped him develop on his feet, but really didn't help him in terms of mat wrestling.

Our youngest son has had to choose between the best options for him and pick what he thinks will help him most. This has meant camps in the summer where he can learn technique but also get in lots of collegiate mat wrestling time. Oregon State, Washington Intensive, and COC in Ellensburg. This year he also had the chance to choose between Junior Nationals and Fargo, so he chose Virginia Beach because it was folkstyle. We would have loved to see him go to Fargo, but it was just too much expense at the time--even though the club would have picked up a chunk of the cost as they did to get him to Virginia.

I think for sure if you are a senior state placer and you want college coaches to get a look you should make the trip to Fargo. Lord willing we will try to get there this year. But again he will be the only one of our boys who could afford to go.

So again, the more irons in the fire the better. I can see where guys like Darren Faber improved tremendously from the Fargo experience. Then again, Haschack got beat in the Mat Classic Final by a guy who didn't go to Fargo.

I Like! One question I heard a rumor that Espinoza may not wrestle?Colby Coates wrestled ganon at camp up around 145 will he make 130.Looks like Tyler will go 152 not 160.And is Hargrave really going that heavy?

Kyler Rhoden from Mark Morris finished second at state at 112 last year, he will be at 112 again this year. Kyler beat Watson in there only meeting last year at the battle of the border.

I think Lopez can make it into finals either at 30 or 35. he has beaten ybarra every match except at state since wrestling there with a concussion and still barely losing to him. ybarra is a good wrestler little technique but can go no stop. lets see how this goes this year and see what happens since there are alot of good wrestlers from 119-145

Tim Barron of Squalicum will be a factor at 189. A matchup of Barron and Desroches might happen at Battle at the Border. Nick King of Clarkston looked really big at COC in Ellensburg, and I'd say he could end up at 215.

I believe his name is Devon. He is a Senior that came over to WV from NC last year. He could not wrestle in any Washington meets last year do to something that happened before he left NC. Do not know exactly what happened so will not speculate. He is a solid wrestler that should get some podium shots at the tourneys this year.

Going 0-2 in Fargo can be misleading. My son's last trip there (as a soph wrestling Junior) he went 2-2 in freestyle. Three of them were high school state champs from other states and the 3rd was a high school runner-up from Michigan. A good part of medaling 5-8 in Fargo is pulling a good draw. You don't want ANY of those guys until the 5th round or later. I saw guys in the same group draw a fish for the first three rounds.

Another time Tony Dorward went back there and went 0-2. People were all over themat.com asking who the kid was from Washington was. Why are they asking about some kid that went two and out? He lost both matches by 1 point and one guy was #1 in the nation and the other was top 5. Records don't always mean a lot, it's WHO you wrestle. Tony D was one tough kid who had some bad breaks at the Mat Classic. I was glad to see him finally win his senior year.

Devan hurt his clavicle in Duals, and had no offense after his 2nd match, however went on to wrestle 6 more times in duals, he was still hurt in fargo...not giving any excuses, but Ford is tough, if Devan is healthy he has a shot at him.

I wouldn't say that, but hopefully we can see them wrestle at some point, if Ford wrestles 45 they won't and Ford should take 1st, I don't think Devan will see 45 this year.

The Fact is: Silva beat Dillon Miller from Deer Park by 1 point in the last seconds last year in a JV match. End of story. He almost lost to a Freshman from Deer Park who is second string. If he wrestled for Deer Park this year he would be third string. Take off the West Valley Goggles folks

He has sweet socks. That's what gives him the magic. We have watched and wrestled against him for years. Silva is very good, and with the coaching of J.O., who knows what could happen. Did anyone pick 2X champ Nick Burnham to be taken out by Silva's WV teammate in the state finals? So let's hope they all stay healthly and hook up where it counts in the dome See you soon Silva! P.S. All seven of those guys will place top 5 and Riverside will have at least two in the finals. It could be a 1-2 finish for Deer Park and Riverside at the Dome. The stags have the edge now, but wait and see how it turns out at the end.

Hey Pete, good to hear from you. No Battle this year, we sure enjoyed it last time though. Well, all those guys are coming back, and all with potential to place, some to win it. Where they all end up will be interesting, but I imagine it will be like this.
Santanna- 125 8th last year
Beard-130 looking to place
Major-130/135 ditto
Hodge-135/140. Regional qualifier, beat state champ Gannon in our dual 2-1. Great potential, should place this year.
Florez- sounds like 152 again should place
Bender-160/171.Got big over the summer! 7th @ dome
DesRoches-171/189. Not sure, 18 pound bracket has a lot of room between so we'll see. 3rd @ dome
Orgill- 215 2X state vet looking to place

Thanks for the update, and sorry we won't have the pleasure of your participation at this year's Battle. I wanted to see Nick wrestle Barron of Squalicum. Tim has grown and worked hard and is a solid 189.

As for Jake I really felt bad for him at Tacoma, but sometimes when guys have unfinished business from high school they are still hungry and tear it up in college. He was a really pleasant respectful kid the couple times I talked to him, and he was always in Ryan's shadow. That is a hard act to follow for sure.

Jeremy is taller and heavier so 215 again for sure.

Jake is redshirting in CA at Cuesta College, a feeder into Cal Poly. He and Ryan are sharing an apartment with two other guys and is doing well. Should get to an open tourney in Fullerton (LA) later this month. He won the varsity wrestle offs by beating two tough guys, but still redshirted anyways. He will be 174/184 this month. He's bulking up!

I saw Devan wrestle Freestyle last year and was very impressed with his athletisim. I am sorry GNL has a problem with that. It is not worth trading insults with someone like that but GNL should use his name and stop talking trash about athletes who are on the mat performing and not sitting behind a keyboard pretending they know what is up.

Are You kidding me!Your talking about when Tyler was in eight grade at camp of champs.Since then the guy has become a beast. I watched him destroy B roads 140 state champ at the three day tourney in chehalis and beat him again in the finals at coc this summer. Hes wrestled a 150 or more matches since tocoma dome last year alot of them at the national level. And witnessed him handle tait tucker with ease in the mat room daily no way will he lose
