Re: Small School Girls 110 Finals
As an official, we always try to get it right, especially on a big stage. From what I initially saw, the Centralia wrestler got behind for the takedown and I awarded the points. In reality with reaction time, came off the side without control or restraining power. I went to the table to hear what the coaches were questioning, then I did what we are trained to do and that is go to my assistant and discuss thoroughly. Reaction time, control and restraining power were the keys in the discussion. I then made the decision to reverse the takedown and let the girls decide how the rest of the match would go. It was a great match, and I believe the correct call was made in the end. As an official I am not out to screw anyone and we love great matches like this. I am also not here to defend my call, I stick by it, but I hope as an official this opens up some dialect with the parents or fans to understand what we see and how we handle this. I did watch this situation on video afterwards with a number of officials and I felt in the end it was correct. It was a close call. I will also learn from this situation and work to be a better official and discuss with my association so we can all be consistent. Both girls deserve the credit for a hell of a season and congratulations to them both!
