For YEARS the argument has been that regionals "sucked" because Metro 3A is a region of its own and there were regions with 6 returning placers/participants that left people home. Not to mention the districts with less schools already get less allocations to regionals so that problem still exists if you are a 5 team school and only get 3 allocations. The only difference is that now it would be 3 to state instead of regionals.
Going straight to state would get more top kids in that may be left behind in a tough region, more appropriately a region with a tough weight, and it will also get some kids there who typically might not make it.
Each has its own positives and negatives. IMO it doesn't matter if a few extra kids get in to "water it down" if you get the tough kids who deserve to be there at the dome.
I really don't get the idea of it being water-downed to be honest. Quite frankly I think it is super annoying to go to early season tournaments and there are state participants, state alternates and regional participants getting seeding criteria. I have said for a while, and how I run my own tournaments is that the only seeding criteria is state placing.
Having a couple extra kids say they made it there doesn't really matter to me because the top 8 at each weight will still be tough, if not even better from some of those kids who might have a tough regional weight but are definitely placer type kids.
So I guess my question would be, are you saying that the tournament placers are watered-down or the first round? I could care less about the first round, I care about the end product. I am willing to bet you that the placers next year will be just as tough if not tougher compared to every other year of the dome. Now the "watered down" happens in the early round of state instead of the semi finals (obviously not all) of regionals.
Just my thoughts.
