All refs have to do is humble up and don't act like they are the top tier officials in the country. I used to feel bad for them but they get paid the same money for what 4 times less work? And thanking? Really? Nobody enters this sport to be thanked. If "thank" is not the last thing on your mind then you're here for the wrong reasons. I too used to feel bad, but when I see BTB (only real mention) take 3 seconds to make 1 swipe and then pretend to just be super precise and... well... by the book... over and over I start to lose my patience. No one calls nearfall like this man... When the mustache guy guy clearly sees that his 10 minute double stall call intervals are NOT improving the sport, but continues to push it, I lose the respect I had. When refs come out and tell you in the POST SEASON that YOU CANNOT CHALLENGE A CALL EVEN ONCE OR IT'S AN AUTOMATIC MISCONDUCT the whole tournament, I lose my respect for this self protecting authoritarian monster of a system. Give me a break. How fragile is your ego that you're going to ding me for daring to disagree and want an explanation. It's these kids' POST SEASON, not a time for you to put up a defensive wall that's gunna protect you from being questioned. You know who you are. This practice is exactly what gets you your no respect (respect, no respect, and disrespect are 3 completely different things for those of you with double digit IQ. Had to throw this in here because I know there will be at least 1 genius taking this out of context).
Oh it's so obvious if you know what you're doing as a ref it hurts. You can double down on your crappy calls, you can ding the coach, you can throw your fists up or to the side all you want, if you suck AND believe you're great, everyone can see and hates you. It's just human nature. Act different, people respond different. And it's not the performance that is the problem. It's the defensive arrogance that goes along with the incompetence that's the annoying icing on the cake. You can see through that #### like glass. Some of you just need to drop everything, start over, and get over yourself. You know how many duals and tournaments I've walked away from wishing that the opposite coach had reffed instead of ideologue posing as a wrestling official? We spend all of our time and hearts building this sport. You can ruin everything in 6 minutes. Whole careers. How come most of you officials have no respect for that? Sure you say you do but your conduct is based around making sure you're correct. I just don't see this level of respect at tournaments. You can't have it both ways. You're either selfless free of ego, or you're a selfish prick. No gray areas here. If you don't DELIBERATELY choose the former, you're the latter.
I don't want to hear anything about thanking or thankless. That's so irrelevant it's a waste of time and a distraction from the problem. This is wrestling. Wrestling doesn't care about feelings. If you don't show up having REAL control of your environment you get chewed EVERY TIME. EVERY TIME. EVERY TIME. No one knows this sport completely. Just look at those who act like they do and how they react when they're wrong and you've found out everything you need to know about the individual.
REFS: THE WAY PEOPLE TREAT YOU IS 100% IN YOUR CONTROL. Some coaches will still complain and be wrong with their complaint but it's much better done in a good ref culture than a bad one. Where is the ref performance and culture leaning? Ask yourself that question and ask yourself why and how it can be fixed. You may feel cozy behind your authoritarian system for now but this system is the one that will continue to ruin Washington Wrestling and ruin your time wearing the stripes (we should still be having fun). Oh wait, you have to actually believe that your system is one of our state's sport's biggest problems. Yes we are heading towards a crisis. Will you keep leading us down that path? I have no problem with the opposite coach reffing the match.
