Barnes was a four time all American in college and was ranked in the top 8 of the all division rankings 3 out of four years. He placed 3, 3, 2, 2 in college nationals. His NAIA team beat Oregon state and Iowa state in duals and took third at the uno open, only loosing to OK St and Iowa. That team still holds the scoring record at NAIA nationals. His senior year of high school he teched fellow senior Nathan Vasquez who is still the only four time state champ from California and was a D1 AA. When he won tristate his junior year there was 12 Fargo all Americans at his weight including 4 time state champ Martin mitchel who took third. TriState is not the tournament it used to be. In addition, as a junior in high school he beat 2 college wrestlers at junior filas in the spring who became D1 AA's the following winter. One of which was a D1 finalist at 125. That same year he beat D1 champion Ryan Lang 22-7 in the semi finals of the Powerade tournament. Although his college career did not live up to his ability, he is by far the most dominate "high school" wrestler to ever come out of WA.
