This weekend the final decision was made by the nurse designated or maybe the female foot doctor who was designated as the tournament medical person. She did this over the advise of 2 physicians that had also assessed the wounds and believed them to be contagious.
The tournament started 45 min late and to protest some referees and coaches refused to leave the middle of the mat.
The open sores on this wrestlers neck were very angry and looked very infected. I was sitting on the bleachers opposite side of the crowd and close enough to the wrestler to see the wounds on his neck as the trainer changed the bandage before the finals. After seeing that, I understood the magnitude of the problem. if my son was in that weight class I would not have allowed them to wrestle him either.
I felt really bad for the wrestler, I have seen him wrestle many times at other events this year and he is an excellent wrestler. I can't imagine being his age and at the center of such a big controversy. The kids who didn't wrestle him were not expected to beat him anyway. However, some fans were actually crappy enough to boo him before his match. Which was horrible to do! I can not imagine how horrible this is for him. He is a young kid.
Nonetheless, the role of the tournament personnel should be to protect the wrestlers, all of them. The AD allowed it, the nurse or doctor designated to make the determination allowed it, if other kids obtain an infection they should be liable. All of our kids get on those mats, the referees included roll around on them. It shouldn't matter if you are #1 in state or #50, if he is infected and has leaking wounds of any kind he should not have been on the mat.
