Trv mentioned that we should be looking at fargo as just one piece. And it led me to think that maybe "fargo" is OUR (WA) problem. Now, I know I mentioned that in fargo one gets to compete against the very best,so you're probably wondering why i would go and propose such a stupid thing, but before you grill me and condemn me off the site, hear me out...
If you think about some of the best highschool programs in the country...some of the toughest states in the country(ca,pa,oh,mi,nj)...they predominately wrestle folkstyle. St.Paris graham for example: how much times have you seen the jordans at frestyle competitions outside of their college wrestling careers? Exactly, you will rarely if ever see SPG wrestling freestyle(SPG is easily one of the best teams ever). They focus mainly on folkstyle wrestling and mainly to prepare them for the college grind. Alot of PA and east coast schools take the same approach... Sure they will go to fargo and some will win it or do great but freestyle isn't their main focus .
There are countless kids who all American year after year in d1 who we have never heard of prior to the tournament or until midway thru the season (when they knock off a fargo star) and it's because they come from states/areas where folkstyle(with a strong emphasis on top and bottom) is the predominant style.
We have to to crawl before we walk. In other words being how we don't have the resources(colleges/camps/person trainers/partners) that some of these other states have I say we MAINLY Focus on our folkstyle skills in hopes to prepare us for the grueling and demanding grind of college wrestling. If you're not ready for the college grind you will never succeed out there(it's rare that one will learn on the job before burning out due to being discouraged and demoralized... e.g Jordan Rogers)...and if you can't cut it in college, the chances of your dreams and aspirations of going to the olympic games will be extremely far fetched. It kind of defeats the purpose of being a fargo star if you're not gonna be able to cut it on the college level.
We need to get to the east coast&mid-west as much as possible...we need bring back their training methods, techniques and philosophies and implement them here in washington. We have guys that place at fargo all the time and then go to the Ironman tournament and get put out by other guys who get put out. It's a whole different monster(folk) and whether people will admit it or not folkstyle is the predominant style in America.
Btw Dave how did the name come about?
