Butane gas cookers work fine and have no problems, some can actually be used with an adapter on the spray can type of gas cartridges, which makes them very cost effective as well!!
But also equally as good if a fraction slower to heat are metho(denatured alcohol)stoves and of course the homemade ones are something you will be proud of making yourself!!
(In this world of consumerism...that is something special!) I have been addicted like others before me to making hundreds of styles of coke can stoves after first seeing them on the net. Yes, they work every bit as good as a bought one, and anyone telling you otherwise is either making the wrong design stove or simply lying... Gas is faster and more controllable, but since when have most bushwalkers been interested in control? I personally find the reason you use a stove on a walk is because you're hungry and you want to boil or cook something NOW, not slowly later? But that might just be me? I'm sure there are gourmet walkers out there who will disagree...and for them, get a gas stove!
I personally find fuel stoves (MSR,etc) dangerous & more importantly smelly! I find it impossible to use one without ending up with fuel smell all over my fingers? And when in a wilderness situation...you don't always have hand washing facilities available to you...A reasonable point to consider I think.
I have been bushwalking and camping in wilderness areas all of my life. I now operate as a tour guide and at first I used a metho stove (store bought one), then for many years used gas (propane/butane)stoves, and now use a mixture of homemade coke can stoves and Gas stoves depending on the circumstances..
