My family and I are planning a 4 day backpacking trip along the AT in the Smoky's. We are at the point where we need to buy and break in our foot gear. I have several questions. Do you recommend hiking boots or hiking/running shoes? Some say boots offer better ankle support and protection from rough terrain while running shoes offer lighter weight and quicker drying time. Secondly, with boots some recommend 2 pair of socks, a wool/nylon blend over a thin, lightweight synthetic liner. If this is the best system for boots, should we do the same if we go with hiking/running shoes? Thanks for your input.
