If you know for sure you'll have to deal with bears, bite the bullet and carry a bear cannister. I've been hiking the northern sierra for almost 20 years and have only had bears in camp once. Most bears away from human habitated areas are terrified of humans. You'll be lucky to find a track or hear one (usually in the early evening or just at dawn). Good Luck.
