It all depends on where you hike and what knowledge and experience you have. In the San Juans, in Colorado, for example, I got by with one pint of water, because there was water everywhere. There were at least several types of wild berries to eat, so my 20 ounces/day of high-calorie food was enough. I had 16 pounds on my back for the week-long trip. I re-supplied after 4 days, but only because I was heading through Silverton anyhow. It rained every day (and snowed once or twice), but I stayed warm and dry. Without the re-supply, I could have still kept it under 20 pounds for the week. The light pack made it possible to go 110 miles also, so resupplying becomes less of a problem. By the way, you can read the story at the site below.
