/my copy of directions for my 8R say:
filling-white gas, 2/3 of a tank only. Pre-heating- Put some Optimus burning paste in the spirit cup. White gas can be used (this is what I do) do not spill. Lighting-Light the burning paste or the gas in the spirit cup. Make sure the valve is closed. When it is almost burnt out turn the regulating key to the left until the burner is lit. Adjust the flame by turning the key. Do not turn too far to the left as this would cause the cleaning needle to block the nipple hole. Cleaning- turn the regulating key quickly to the left and back again. If the flame goes out-keep a match ready.
