Seems to me one of the problems with a "meet all needs, cover all emergencies" type of survival kit is that the kit will be so large you likely will not have it with you when you might need it most. Anything bigger than say a small fanny pack will likely be left behind in the car or at camp for that "quick jaunt to the summit" or other planned short hike that winds up leaving you in the woods overnight. How many times have we all taken walks with little more that what was in our pockets? It would seem prudent to fill our pockets with the essential necessities like a good firestarter and tinder, knife, cordage, small flashlight and compass, plastic trashbag or space blanket, water and snacks. Also one of the many "mini-kits" found on various websites would be good. I think the idea should be to keep it small, if you're speaking strictly an emergency overnighter kit. That way there's a better chance you actually have it when you need it.
