Posted by JAK Also, I should move the firestarter further up the list. It is essential as a signalling device after day 3 lost, once they are looking for you. It is not just for warmth, drying out, boiling water, and keeping spirits up. So the big 4 = fleece blanket, garbage bags, chocolate bar, firestarter (which implies tin cup also though you can boil water with a hot rock in a hole lined with birch bark).

All good stuff though. Good idea to keep an old day pack or fanny pack in the car full of stuff like this, for car accidents, winter storms, and impromptu day hikes. A lot of camping stuff that you don't use anymore can go in.
