Yes. There is a difference betwen first aid an an emergency kit. Emergency gear is probably a better term,ie. what one needs to have to spend an enexpected night out. First aid = injury preparedness. Far more useful than a space blanket would be a bivy sack and or tarp and then sleeping bag. Alone one could waste a lot of energy, not only in starting a fire, but then keeping it going. That said, a group of skiiers stranded out overnight on Jay Peak, VT., last year prevented hypothermia by keping a fire going trough the night. I do carry a small one blade knife with me and, of course, a compass. It is almost impossible to walk in a straight line through the woods without a compass. Go to an open field (soccer or baseball, etc.) wear a blindfold. Unless you have the aid of a steady sound like passing traffic or hammering, etc., you will very soon start drifting off course. In the woods you might think, "oh, I'll just keep the sun on my left. Well even on a sunny day you can't always see the sun and you can be a lot of degrees off with the sun on your right. Often staying in one place is best anyway. I agree about the garbage bag. You could climb into it for warmth, wind and wet protection.
