Posted by JAK Depends on your backyard. Here in New Brunswick I've never been a fan of emergency blankets and the like. I should think that a fleece blanket, 2 large garbage bags, and at least 100g of chocolate would be my first priority. Water we have in plenty and if lost I would not leave it once I found it. The orange garbage bags would be better than an emergency blanket for rain gear, shelter, and visibility. I would take deet bug repelant over a water bottle, and another chocolate bar over the ability to make fire. But map, firestarter, compass, more fleece, tin cup, candle, lighter, more fleece, water bottle, headlamp - those would be next on my list and in that order. You can do a lot with your hands here without a knife, except cut yourself, but I would include the knife with the firestarter. I always carry a cell-phone, but never rely on it.

If I carried anything for kindling it would be potato chips - and that I would eat. We have a lot of birch bark and dry dead spruce branches - not a lot of potato chips.
I don't believe in an emergency kit as such.
You should always carry what you feel you need.
