Thanks for your reply. Since I no longer backpack, I really don't want to tempt fate with propane canisters. But that little puppy heated many cups of coffee and pans of soup in its day. I think that I will drill an appropriate sized hole in a small pipe plug and and solder it to the brass dink that was inserted into the rubber grommet of the fuel cannister. I can (I think) prevent solder from going into the small hole by plugging it with a toothpick. Now by having a small pipe fitting on the stove , I can then connect a propane cylinder to the stove.
