Hopefully the subject got your attention.
New to your site, and backpacking as well for that matter. I frequently hike along water sources such as rivers, and currently carry my own water in (HEAVY). I am looking for a filter/purification system, but notice that most systems mention "lakes and streams." My local river water is not stagnent, but it is murky (Maumee River, NW Ohio). Any advice? As a former Marine there was always a water buffalo we could fill up at, but I'm now a Scout leader and want to stear my boys in the right direction to be self sufficient. Would a filter and iodine work? Do I need a purification system in lieu of a filter? I am really new to this and an humbly throwing myself to the deck and begging your advice.
BTW, I'm not concerned about "speed of filtering" or "lightweight" at this point, just the basic health concerns.
