It is not often that one gets to answer their own question but that is the case. I tried " O " rings and found that a 3/4 inch O.D. by 1/8 inch thickness worked. But I really needed a new gasket. The problem was, how to cut a gasket and get the inside diameter concentric with the outside diameter.
I used 3/32 inch thick rubber auto gasket. Get the softest you can find. Plumbing supply gasket was tried but it was a bit too hard. Auto gasket is somewhat softer.
Punch the inside hole first. I have used a number of items to cut the inside hole. A spent
.380 auto case works fine, as does a piece of tubing from a broken wind chime. Anything to get the correct size inside hole.
After cutting the inside hole, take a 3/8 inch drill bit and drill into the END EDGE on a 2x4 block. Find a 3/4 inch outside diameter washer.
I had to get one slightly oversize and spin it in my drill onto a file to reduce the O.D. to the required 3/4 inch.
Then push the gasketing material over the 3/8 inch stub sticking out of the 2 x 4, place the washer over the stub and with a sharp box cutter knife cut away all the excess gasketing material.
It worked for me. No warranties or guarantees made for others. But it worked fine for me.
NOW: NEXY QUESTION:
How does one make a wick for the 8 R Stove ?
