Year of Manufacture *: 2017
A good customer of ours has recently swapped his Honda for a 2017 Prius. He would like us to service it but Toyota have frightened him off by saying that we can't service his Hybrid battery and therefore his warranty would be void!
Looking at the Toyota website it states that all the car is under warranty for 5 years and that includes the Hybrid drive & battery.
However, there is an optional Hybrid Extended Battery Warranty which can be renewed every year to get an extra year's cover or 10K miles up until the 10th anniversary. However this requires an annual health check which is £45 or free if done at time of service. Now I assume this extended warranty costs the owner each year?
Looking at Autodata service schedules, at the bottom of each one it states this:-
Optional hybrid system health check
Important
Must be carried out by an authorised repairer/dealer but the check is not required during the standard warranty period. Once complete and any faults rectified, the warranty of the hybrid battery will be extended for a further 10 000 miles/15 000 km or 12 months up to a maximum of 120 months from the date of registration. Refer to warranty terms and conditions. Additional charge may apply
So this would suggest that the Health Check is not required until the standard warranty expires. So we could service it for the first 5 years and then he could then have Toyota do the Hybrid Battery Check every year after if he takes out the optional Extended Warranty?
My question is, will then offer him the warranty at the end of the 5 years if the battery check hasn't been performed up to that point?
Anyone with any experience of this extended warranty and/or servicing new Toyota Hybrids?
Any help would be appreciated. We just want to give our customer an honest answer even if that means he's best just letting Toyota service it, but personal experience tells me never to trust what the dealerships say.
Regards
Sean
