Had a strange one last week:
Vehicle presented for a full service with a report of pwr steering failiure after an emergency stop. The technician reported no fault found on the PAS but the coil was mis-firing and recommended that and new spark plugs.
I ended up fitting the new coil pack and plugs which initially cured the mis-fire but on road test the PAS failed again and the engine lost power (logging a random mis-fire dtc). I suspected an injector fault which I confirmed as no 4 (nearest the cam pulley in this case) which cured the mis-fire when it was replaced.
The weird thing is that, since curing the mis-fire, the steering has worked perfectly under all conditions (so far anyway!).
Does anyone know if these models have some sort of failsafe that deactivates the PAS if the engine has a fault? I can't see why it would but if not it's a big coincidence. I know about the issue with the ignition switch but I couldn't make it fail after fixing the miss.
If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be very grateful.
Cheers - Paul.
