We've got a young horse in the United States Equine Sanctuary & Rescue and his knee is very swollen...actually, it's permanently enlarged due to bone spurs. If someone had removed them early, he'd be sound, but it's too late for him.
I think you should take your horse to the vet because it could be arthritis or bone spurs, if it appears to be originating in the knee. And, even if you haven't been doing any strenuous riding and don't have any holes in the pasture, he still could have slipped and twisted that knee. Hopefully it's something minor.
