If the child is capable of completing the CELF-P, I prefer to use that test. It is a bit long, in that you are administering 6 sections to a 3 or 4 year old, but I have completed it in a half hour. There are no manipulatives, just an easel.
I have also seen it identify delays that the PLS-4 did not. I have had children who were initially given the PLS-4 during the eval. and who were considered to be mildly delayed. I later administered the CELF-P to those children and they came out as severely delayed. I had a child whose scores were over 100 on the PLS-4 but were in the low 80's on the CELF-P. So I really prefer the CELF-P because I have seen for myself that it identifies delays that don't turn up on the PLS-4. I also think the PLS-4 has some flawed items, such as where they put the block in and take it out of the box - do they really understand the prepositions, or are they just doing the obvious thing to do with the block? Then there is a quantity item with the blocks where most kids get the point because they get 'one' and 'all', but they don't know 'some' or 'rest'.
