I have found the research done by The Entire World of /r/ to be very interesting. I use some of their materials and theories when treating /r/. I think the /r/ phoneme distortion greater impacts speech intelligibility and it causes many kids to be very self conscious when speaking! Parents pick on it and are very concerned. But, for placement purposes our school system only views it as 1 error and thinks kids should be exited if /r/ is there only distortion...never mind the negative impacts socially...they have to meet criteria with 2 or more errors, have affect on eduction, and NEED the specialized in instruction...all 3 prongs to qualify!
