I know some of our site based programs are using the news 2 you the way you described talkdoc. I love the movie night- how fun! Have you tried using the progress monitoring sheets? Also under the page for the newspaper look at tools- lesson plans there are some ideas there too.
Generally when I use the paper with language kids I am working on vocabulary, comprehension and problem solving skills. I do tally marks for each student when they are correct and zeros when they are not. My other less formal measuring is a star, check, and zero. These indicate the student either: really followed along, understood and was engaged in the activity, or they kind of got it or they didn't get it at all and may have been disengaged.
