I don't use News 2 you with every student. It works the easiest with artic kids- I can have them highlight their sound on the pages and then read them. We can discuss the topic and work on carryover of their sounds.
I do use it with language and some students with autism. It has current news so we talk about the vocabulary, etc. Depending on the topic we may go to the website that goes with the topic- ex: Lego was the topic and the weblink was about an artist that makes unbelievable things out of legos. The paper also has an area called Joey's locker which contains worksheets in 2 levels for lots of activities- I print out the ones that work best in speech.
There is a knock knock joke page and we all take turns telling it. The recipe page is good too but I haven't had time to make the things this year. But we always talk about the recipe and do some problem solving with it- would you like it? why or why not? etc.
Sometimes I have taken a topic from the news around the world link and used that as starting point for a unit- ex: volcano erupting in South America. We looked up pictures of it on the internet and started a mini unit to learn about volcanos.
I guess the use of it is only limited to your ability to adapt it to your students' needs. They even have a section on their web site that addresses goals that could be incorporated into an IEP.
