In a nutshell, I have found it helpful to start out with a series of /t,t,t,t,t/ sounds, then /t,t,t,t,s-s-s-s-/ (blending the sounds and drawing out the /s/), then working on words like "giants" to get the "s" sound properly articulated. Of course you have to be careful that they are saying the /t/ accurately too! I would also check out his tonsils/adnoids/allergies as these can (if to big) cause irregular tongue forward and mouth breathing.
