Bananas grow on a tree of sorts called a psuedo(sue-dough) stem. The leaves are held together in a tight bunch resembling a tree trunk. They are really a herbaceous plant and quite juicy when cut. The plant arises out of the ground from a corm like a gladiolous except they can weigh 20-30 pounds. This is where all the plants come from is this psuedo bulb. The height of the plants can be from 3-30 feet tall depending on the variety and growing conditions. The leaves can extend as far as 7-9 feet from the stem and look very tropical. They do shread when wind exceeds certain limits but does nothing to harm them except their appearence. The main plant eventually fruits and dies just like corn does. So, to keep growing they produce pups or off-shoots to continue growing. They perodicly do this and esspecially just before fruiting. In a period of time depending on the variety there could be as many as 20-30 plants growing together called a mat. I hope this answers your question.
