Posted by drc The true Japan Fibre Banana, the ito-basho, is Musa balbisiana, previously known from Okinawa as Musa liukiuensis. Both these are imports traded into Okinawa, M. basjoo from China and M. balbisiana, probably, from Indonesia. David Constantine

The Japan Fibre Banana and Musa basjoo are not one and the same but the mistake goes way back to 1830 and all the books say that it is.
