I believe it is true, although I feel slightly sad for knowing this. A while back I was watching QI with stephen fry and the conversation of walking banana plants came up. the producers of the show actually confirmed that banana plants do indeed walk although i'm not sure of the distances or that they walk like we do??? would be a bit like attack of triffids or something but yeah they do walk. hope it helps you and if you can try and get hold of that QI episode. couldn't tell you which one it was but it was screened.
