I have heard of several instances where people thought they were stocking largemouth, and ended up getting spots. They are hard enough to tell apart when they are adults sometimes, let alone as fingerlings, so maybe that explains it.

As far as toothy patches go, it is not a 100% indicator. I have seen largemouth with toothy patches, and have seen the DNR guys force the release of fish at KY lake that they said were largemouth even though they had the toothy patch.
