berkley xt and xl come chalked when new. i have line that is 12 years old on 1 lb spools and it still holds up wonderfully. it is stored in a rubbermaid air/water tight container on my closet shelf at home. all you can do to find out if it is still good is tie some knots and see if it breaks easily or if it breaks often when tying the knots and cinching it down. good luck and hope that helps.
