Another reason is so that you only have to use a minimal amount of a higher quality line such as Fluorocarbon or Braid. You can use a backing of mono for the first 100 yards or so and then finish off the spool with 50 to 100 yards of your good line. It saves that good line for more uses! Hope this helps! Rob
