I personally don't play automated games much these days, and I'll admit most of my experience with them (prior to 2005) is largely with Horseland and Ludus Equinus (which I don't believe is around anymore?).
I very much agree with what Restless has said about stats and foundation horses.
What I didn't like about Horseland is that without spending real money, you can't feed your own horses. I don't mind a game that makes you board somewhere if I must (though I enjoy a free stable!) but I hate relying on someone else to feed my horses.
I'm also not a fan of paying real money for game features either, but I do understand and appreciate that it's a necessary part of running an automated game. I strongly feel that unpaid members should never be at a disadvantage in general game play (ability to feed, successes in shows, etc.). Make paid features appealing, yes, but don't make them vital to gameplay.
