Help w/ servers... realy appreciated

Ok well my parents and I want to possibly buy a server/something to make our own website without hte high cost of going through Geocities/Freewebs/Etc. for a domain name at like $10 a month. So Ummm.. where can we get a good priced server/whatever you need where you can just have your name.com and at your own house. We think it's a server but we're not sure and we obviously don't want to just buy a server that's not going to be able to hold our website domain.
