No, don't personally like the age system.
I'd rather go with the Thoroughbred grading of races from Allowance to GI than the age system. Or use the Australian method of classing horses by the number of wins they have. Most real races that I've seen are either for 2yos, 3yos, or open age, not dividing it up so much like a halter competition. But I haven't really looked into it much lately.
Also, no in the USA not all races are a mile long. The 'Triple Crown for Pacers' races are all only half a mile long. The 'Triple Crown for Trotters' races I believe has two mile courses and one half a mile race. But most races are held at the mile.
I would be glad to see a new classlist and better harness races
