I am in Lynchburg, Va. zone 7a. I am surprised also. no others lost a spear. I wrap with newspaper. I think it does not go dormant in winter because of the heat generated from the septic tank. To the roots it seems like spring or fall and the rest of the palm is experiencing winter. That is my guess. But not sure. Plus it definitely not getting good drainage at this spot. I realize now that its a good spot for summer but not good for winter. And yes I think water does get in to the crown. Thanks for the tips.
