Certainly you can start a date palm from a date seed.(assuming the date wasn't cooked etc...)I've done it before. Its true that you can't be sure if the seed you planted would produce high quality fruit.But that would be Many years away, and it might not matter to you., if you just wanted a date palm and weren't worried about fruit quality. Especially if its going to be a container plant. It helps to soak the seeds in water for a couple of days, and to keep them very warm,and damp. It may take 2 or 3 months or longer for them to sprout.
