I think that the locals in charge of municipal projects are very much traditionalists. When I approached my county a couple of years ago for the Hometown Grant, I was blown off. Weeks went by with NO response, then I was flat out told that they had no interest in planting palms. Mind you, I was pitching minors and needles, both GA natives.
The planting of palms will be in the hands of private landowners for many years to come. I think in part to their current use at Mexican Restaurants.
I am surprised that one never sees Live Oak planted either. However, when I stopped by Shemin Nurseries once, I was told that the tree is not cold-hardy here. I know of only two at commercial plantings in Gwinnett County. One at Gwinnett Place Mall above the food court and another planted at a strip mall.
I agree that Atlanta should look more inviting in the winter. Live Oak, Magnolias, American Holley, some native palms; all would help and all should be saleable to public acceptance.
Of course, we have to stop landscapers from topping-off trees 10-ft above the ground also.
