What you purchased is most likely Washingtonia robusta, a zone 9 plant. They typically defoliate at 20 deg F and a small one would probably die at that temp.
You could plant it outside, 3 to 4 ft from a south facing wall. This way, some heat loss from the building would help the plant. If you really want this palm, you will have to wrap some small holiday lights around the trunk and also an old blanket.
The Chinese Windmill palm, Trachycarpus fortunei is much more appropriate for our cold winters and worth the extra cost.
Sabal minor and Rhapidophyllum hystrix are small shrubs that are totally cold hardy for you.
Sabal palmetto is pretty reliable, given full sun, ample water and planting in early summer.
