I have been using heat tape for years. I put the heat tape directly on the truck. Do not let tape overlap itself or it can melt. Make sure the end with the theristor (on/off switch) is not wrapped, and exposed to cold. I then wrap several layers of burlap around the trunk over the tape. Burlap breaths easily, and holds up nice in the weather. Can also use the black fabric used to keep down weeds sold in garden stores, not the plastic type, but the fabric type.
