I live in St Louis MO (USDA zone 6). I planted 2 Washingtonia filifera palms (7 gallon size from Stokes Tropicals) on the south side of my house in April 2009. They are both growing very fast and look great. I had sucess overwintering 2 Trachycarpus fortunei plams outside on the east side of my house this past winter using leaf cages and wraping the trucks with burlap.
I am considering using low voltage pipe heating cables in the winter to keep the ground and trucks from freezing. Has anyone had sucess using pipe heating cable with Washingtonia filifera? If so, did you also use a leaf cage and wrap the truck? Should I cover with plastic to keep the truck from getting wet? I plan on cutting of the leaves if and when they are damaged by cold.
