It really would depend a lot on where you live and the length of your growing season.
The more sun they get the better, but will tolerate partial shade if you're in a zone 8 or warmer and give it good drainage, otherwise it will slowly decline in my opinion. Keeping it as dry as you can during winter will go a long way too.
