I think that the single trunk needles are almost a different variety palm than the suckling palms. I have many single truck needles over 20 years old that remain single trucks, some trunks about 3-4 ft high. Some of these were large when I got them 20 years ago and are probably 30-40 year old palms. I also have very large suckling needles probably 10' in diameter and 7' high to top of leaves. My guess is that any pup you seperate from a suckling variety will eventually suckle. I did have one large single trunk that all of a sudden began to suckle after about ten years (very strange)!
