Hi, I have been reading since 1999 this message board and I find it very interesting.
I am a cold-hardy palm fanatic.
I would like to share some info with you guys regarding the climate in which native Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera are grown in Morocco.
The main problem is that there are not enough meteo stations to properly provide the winter minimum temperature observed in the native habitat of the hardiest chamaerops humilis cerifera seed source. But it's interesting to acknoledge that it's native to the Tizi N'Test village in Morocco in the Haut-Atlas mountains.
Altitude = 2092 meters.
December average minimum temperature = -1,4°C
December average maximum temperature = 8,9°C
January average minimum temperature = 2,4°C
January average maximum temperature = 9,7°C
February average minimum temperature = 2,7°C
February average maximum temperature = 11,4°C
March average minimum temperature = 4,1°C
March average maximum temperature = 12,7°C
It is also know that in this region the average temperature usallly drops 0,44°C per 100 meters.
Consequently this variety in experiening much colder winter temperature then natural chamaerops humilis in the Var region in France close the Hyères-les-Palmiers village. It is also known that this cerifera variety grows at higher altitude in this Haut-Atlas region but no precise climatic data are available (at least to my knowledge).
So now americans will probably realize that the common cerifera variety available in North America isn't from the best natural cold location because it seens to be not that resistant to cold in the eastern USA. well there is the moisture factor but...
